Setif Algeria Market town 112Km (70 miles) west of Constantine on the road and rail route to Algiers near the Wadi Bou-Sellam. Lying 1067m (3500 ft) above sea level in the Kabilie Mountains, it is the administrative center for the district and serves an important agricultural region dealing mainly in grain and cattle. Setif was founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD, and remains from that period can still be seen. The town declined until garrisoned by the French in 1838. In 1945 the Sétif town area was the site of a spontaneous outburst against French colonial rule, and more than 100 Europeans were killed. In retaliation, by Algerian count after the fact, between 6,000 and 8,000 Muslims were massacred. The town's chief industry is flour milling.
